About this site

I grew up in the dawn of when kids went from spending their days outside to being cooped up inside playing video games. But I also grew up with key people around me who encouraged me to get outside, explore the outdoors and to find enjoyment in the toil of physical expression. So I run, hike, backpack, climb, ski and whatever else I can outdoors.

My hope is to be able to share my passion for the outdoors, fitness and outdoor culture with as many people as I can and to encourage people to do the same. The creation of this world was a gift to us all, as is the gift of waking up every morning with the breath of life.

So that’s where the name, Pro Active Outside, comes from. Take charge of your life, be active, and as much as possible, do these things outside.

How to use the site

This is a blog, and it has a lot of personal writing that I like to share. But it is also a resource. Under the categories, you’ll see trip reports, which will show you information on great places to go, how to get there and what to expect. Under videos, you’ll see helpful or entertaining videos I’ve found. Under fitness, you’ll see items dealing specifically with fitness issues; the other categories are similar to their respective subject matters.

Explore the site, find topics you like, and feel free to comment, suggest topics or ask questions.

  1. I stumbled across your blog in a search for the name of the trail up to the top of Elk Mountain in the Wichitas, then I recognized your name from a posting on Backwoods FB wall. Great write-ups on the hikes! Always nice to find another Okie that can appreciate Charon’s Gardon as much as Wheeler Peak šŸ™‚

  2. I couldn’t agree more with your philosophy. I’m a city girl but love camping on the weekends and utilizing every single one of the parks within the city & hope to inspire others to do the same. I look forward to looking around your blog. Thanks!

  3. I couldn’t agree more. The great outdoors is one of life’s simple pleasures, best of all it’s free to enjoy

  4. As one who loves nature and being outdoors too, I think it’s great that you’re sharing your love for the outdoors through blogging. Have a blast & safe travels! ~Rose

  9. Hi Bob, great blog! I too maintain a similar blog focused on a relatively overlooked natural environment on the plains, the Caprock Canyons of west Texas (caprockcanyoneer.wordpress.com). However, I am preparing to relocate to Oklahoma this spring. Needless to say I am excited about the hiking opportunities in the Wichita Mountains. I would love to learn more about your knowledge of the Wichitas. Please feel free to contact me through the contact GUI on my blog. -Todd

  10. Thanks for the reply, Bob. Do you have any suggestions for reference guides on the Wichitas? I enjoy studying the history and finer details of places I hike.

    • I’m not really familiar with a lot of historical books and such with that area, although I know there are trail guide books out there. There is also a climbing guide that details all of the rock climbing routes in the entire range. I also found this, for trail guides:

      Here’s a link for a climbing guide:

  11. I am a student at Oklahoma Baptist University and I work for the student newspaper. I was wondering if I could have your permission to borrow your picture of a tornado taken from Oklahoma Baptist University for a story I am writing about tornadoes and safety procedures for the campus.

    • Your best bet would be to contact one of the people who took the photos; their names are in the captions. Easiest would be to contact Todd Fisher for his. He is the pastor of Immanuel Baptist Church in Shawnee and would probably be the easiest person to reach.

Love it man, I totally agree that this world is here to go out and be explored, and physical activity is a great way to celebrate that. Cheers to fitness, nature and a pint of quality beer!

  13. Your page is so inspiring – gotta love your tagline! šŸ™‚ You, along with many travelers could utilize our new and upcoming app, POI. Itā€™s for the travelers and the locals to post their points of interest!

Iā€™d like to start a movement. To inspire people to live and see more of the world. POIā€™s purpose is to create a community and world awareness -where the focus is the worldā€™s pointā€™s of interest. It becomes a shared goal to explore and exploit the worldā€™s POI!

Iā€™d appreciate to hear your feedback. Let me know if this is something you’d like to updated on – upcoming release and details on the app!

    Let me know your thoughts!

    Thanks,
    The POI Movement
